Birdland (315 West 44th Street – between 8th & 9th Aves.) is pleased to announce an exciting line-up of extraordinary entertainment for the month of January 2012. A detailed schedule follows:
• Nicholas Payton Quartet & Television Studio Orchestra
Since 1994 Nicholas Payton has been lauded as one of the leading young instrumental voices in jazz. Even though he started out as a “young lion” — a guardian of the swing and bebop flames — the 38-year-old Payton has devoted himself to discovering sounds outside of traditional confines. Having grown up in a family and community of musicians in New Orleans, Payton has since built his unique voice by melding a post-bop foundation, a heavy emphasis on groove, a soulful history and various experimental elements. While Payton's quartet including the sounds of trumpet, piano, Fender Rhodes, bass, drums, percussion and vocals has been described as “Soulful, pensive and romantic,” The New York Times calls his new 20-piece Television Studio Orchestra, “…potent, with a heavy-gauge trumpet section, a sleekly adaptable rhythm section and a handful of charismatic soloists.”

• David Murray Cuban Ensemble Plays Nat King Cole “En Español”
Tenor saxophonist David Murray is known as a prominent leader of the New York jazz scene of the 1970s and 80s. A founding member of The World Saxophone Quartet, Murray worked with the likes of Oliver Lake, Max Roach, Randy Weston and Elvin Jones and as a leader of a variety of ensembles from trio to quartet to octet to big band. Murray's music emerged from the free jazz movement but evolved into a unique mature style combining the innovations of free jazz with the foundational sounds of New Orleans and African traditions. While Murray has been honored with Grammy awards, a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Village Voice designation, “Musician of the Decade” in the 1980’s, his new Motema Records CD titled “David Murray Cuban Ensemble Plays Nat King Cole en Español,” stands as one of his most beautiful and unexpected creations, a contemporary instrumental interpretation of two unlikely classics, Nat King Cole's 1958 and 1962 albums “Cole Español” and “More Cole en Español.”

• Jane Monheit
From the fresh-faced innocence of “Never Never Land” (2000) to the world-wise maturity of “The Lovers, The Dreamers and Me,” (2009) in just ten years, critically-acclaimed jazz vocalist Jane Monheit's honey-smooth vocals, silky phrasing and natural knack for storytelling have earned her two Grammy nominations and established her as one of her generation’s most beloved and accomplished vocalists. Jane returns to Birdland on the heels of her acclaimed Emarcy/Universal CD release “Home,” a 12-song-cycle and ode to the golden age of the jazz standard featuring the treasured tunes of songwriters and lyricists past and present including Rodgers and Hart and Dietz and Schwartz among others.

• Tierney Sutton Band
“Known for her original and edgy interpretations of the classic jazz songbook, vocalist Tierney Sutton has been hailed by The New York Times as “a serious jazz artist who takes the whole enterprise to another level.” The recipient of numerous honors, including the current Jazz Times Magazine cover story, Ms. Sutton has been a frequent performer at prestigious venues including Birdland and Carnegie Hall and has been featured in popular films and commercials. For over fifteen years, The Tierney Sutton Band has included pianist Christian Jacob, bassists Trey Henry and Kevin Axt and drummer Ray Brinker. Their latest CD “American Road” recently earned two 2011 Grammy nominations for “Best Jazz Vocal Album” and “Best Arrangement Accompanying A Vocal.”

• ARTURO O’FARRILL & THE AFRO-LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA
Grammy Award-winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill — leader of the “first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz” (NY Times) — was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. After leading his late father's orchestra for many years, Arturo formed his own band, The Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra in order to explore his and other compositions in the panoply of Afro-Latin music. Birdland is pleased to welcome Arturo and the ALJO to a new residency.

• JIM CARUSO’S “CAST PARTY”
“No one can be called a true New Yorker until they’ve been to the ‘Cast Party,’ which is to Broadway what the Conde-Nast cafeteria is to publishing. Divas and dapper-dans insouciantly sip cocktails while watching each other sing and perform at the open-mic event during Broadway’s dark night,” says Next Magazine. Broadway impresario Jim Caruso hosts a combination open-mic, networking event and party in which the biggest stars on Broadway relax on their night off by performing their favorite songs in an informal setting.

• THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG CENTENNIAL BAND

Inspired by the noble jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and their colleagues, David Ostwald’s Gully Low Jazz Band (also known as the Louis Armstrong Centennial Band) breathes life and passion into America’s own great art form. “There has never been a band quite like the Gully Low Jazz Band,” notes legendary record producer George Avakian. “Most groups, past and present, stick to one style. Some current groups attempt to recreate early recordings in their entirety. These guys do neither. Inspired by divergent bands of the 1920s and 30s, you’ll hear them swing a variety of styles in music by a wide range of composers, always try to the joy and heart of the music.” Now in its 11th year of residency at Birdland, the weekly post-workday engagement is the city’s best musical bargain! Tuba player David Ostwald leads a rotating lineup that features talents such as clarinetist Anat Cohen, trombonist/vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Ehud Asherie, drummer Marion Felder, and more!
