ARE SAYING ABOUT THE SHOW

New York, NY (June 15, 2011) – On Sunday night, June 12th, the Broadway premiere production of Larry Kramer’s ground-breaking play The Normal Heart took home the Tony Awards® for Best Revival of a Play, Best Featured Actor in a Play (John Benjamin Hickey) and Best Featured Actress in a Play (Ellen Barkin). These wins helped “the normal heart” become the number one search term on Google all across America on “Tony Sunday” (beating “lebron,” “army wives,” “mavericks vs heat,” and “dallas mavericks,” which rounded out the top five searches of the day). Since then, The Normal Heart’s daily box office wrap has more than tripled from their average daily sales before Sunday’s Tony Awards.

To help celebrate the Award-winning production, a “Friends of the Normal Heart” video is now available online, featuring commentary from Elton John and David Furnish, David Hyde Pierce, Nathan Lane, Cynthia Nixon, Rick Elice, Judith Light, Gavin Creel, Cheyenne Jackson, Bob Balaban and Michael Urie about the importance of the play and its impact on audiences. To watch this video, visit http://youtu.be/zntr8mxuXmA or http://www.thenormalheartbroadway.com/friends.

Fans are also invited to join the Friends of The Normal Heart and upload stories about the show and the impact it’s had at www.YouTube.com/TheNormalHeartBway. Submissions will be featured on The Normal Heart Facebook page and on the “Friends of The Normal Heart” page of the official website.

In addition to the show’s Tony Awards, The Normal Heart has been honored as this season’s Best Revival of a Play by the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Drama League Awards and has received Drama Desk Awards for Best Ensemble and Best Direction of a Play, along with a Special Citation from the New York Drama Critics Circle.

The cast of The Normal Heart includes Ellen Barkin, Patrick Breen, Mark Harelik, John Benjamin Hickey, Luke Macfarlane, Joe Mantello, Lee Pace, Jim Parsons, Richard Topol, and Wayne Alan Wilcox.
The premiere presentation of Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart on Broadway is produced by Daryl Roth, Paul Boskind and Martian Entertainment in association with Gregory Rae and Jayne Baron Sherman/Alexander Fraser.

The design team includes David Rockwell (Sets), Martin Pakledinaz (Costumes), David Weiner (Lighting), David Van Tieghem (Sound and Original Music), and Batwin & Robin (Projections).

The story of a city in denial, The Normal Heart unfolds like a real-life political thriller — as a tight-knit group of friends refuses to let doctors, politicians and the press bury the truth of an unspoken epidemic behind a wall of silence. First produced by Joseph Papp at New York’s Public Theater, the play was a critical sensation and a seminal moment in theater history. So ahead of its time was this play that many of the core issues it addresses – including gay marriage, the healthcare system and, of course, AIDS – are just as relevant today as they were when it first premiered.

Tickets, priced from $26.50 to $116.50, are available via Telecharge.com, by calling (212) 239-6200, or in person at the Golden Theatre box office (252 West 45th Street). General rush tickets are available day-of for $36.50 at the box office on a first come, first served basis beginning two hours before every performance. (Limit two tickets per person; cash or credit card.)

The weekly performance schedule is as follows: Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday at 8:00 p.m., Thursday at 8:00 p.m., Friday at 8:00 p.m., Saturday at 2:00 p.m. & 8:00 p.m., and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m.

The entire company of The Normal Heart is deeply committed to the message of this play, and so the production is proud to support The Actors Fund, Friends In Deed, amfAR and the Human Rights Campaign.
